El Club 2CVGB (Gran Bretaña) ya está con los preparativos de la WORLD MEETING 2005
World Meeting Update 5
The site of the 16th World Meeting has been chosen! Those of you following progress closely won’t be surprised to hear that the chosen site is Floors Castle, which is in Kelso in the Scottish Borders region.
Why Scotland?
The world meeting is a showcase for what Britain does best and is renowned for abroad. Among other things, this list includes scenery, history and stately homes. A straw poll at the world meeting in Austria and at the French National also threw up the ‘Celtic’ aspects of Scotland and Wales.
An ideal world meeting site needs straightforward road access, a large flat field (with room for expansion if the need arises), access control, be within our budget and, we believe, an impressive backdrop. Most of the rest (good toilets, showers, entertainment etc) can be brought in. Also, crucially, we need the enthusiastic support of the local community and landowner.
Of the dozens of responses we had from Tourist Boards all over England, Scotland and Wales, only the Scottish Borders Tourist Board seemed to understand exactly what a world meeting needs and was alone in recommending suitable sites, providing assistance in meeting landowners and briefing them in advance. The site chosen is only just over the border, so it is relatively close, while still being in Scotland. Edinburgh is an easy day-trip, as is Lindisfarne and beautiful scenery is all around. A table showing distances from major British cities and ports is below.
Why Kelso?
Kelso is a market town with all the amenities you’d expect, including pubs, supermarkets, food shops, tourist office, hôtels and garages. In fact, everything you’d need. The support we had from the Scottish Borders Tourist Board was matched by the town of Kelso. Both the Provost and the leader of the Chamber of Commerce have been really eager to ‘win’ the world meeting for their town. Also, every year at the end of July, Kelso plays host to the Borders Fair, an agricultural show that shows the rural side of Britain that not all our guests will be aware of. This, and the fact that Kelso has played host to the Honda Goldwing version of a world meeting, shows how willing the town is to welcome large numbers of camping foreigners in their midst.
Why Floors Castle?
Floors Castle is Scotland’s largest inhabited castle. It is within easy walking distance from the centre of Kelso. In fact, the last house in the town is just yards away from the impressive gate that will be the main entrance for the world meeting. The field we will have is flat and should cope with the number of cars we’re expecting. There are also extra overflow fields available, if we need them. Camping will be on the banks of the River Tweed, just opposite the ruins of what was once the capital of Scotland. In fact, there’s a tree on the field that commemorates the spot where King James II was killed in 1460.
Floors Castle is set on raised ground overlooking ‘our’ field and makes an impressive backdrop for the meeting. It has a large restaurant and also a partially-covered mews where we will be able to site a permanent museum that will be completely secure at night. And last, but by no means least, the support from the Castle matches that of our other partners.
